Wise Words with William

And now it’s time for Wise Words with William, the part of the show where William comes out and gives some wise words.

“The apparel oft proclaims the man.” -from Hamlet

“In black ink my love may still shine bright.” -from Sonnet 65

“But if it be a sin to covet honour, I am the most offending soul alive.” -from Henry V

I’ve Got to Underline That One

I really love finding, underlining, and hoarding quotes that I come across. I search for quotes in books, in movies, in music- in basically any existing media. Quotes make me think. They help me define complex qualities like love and justice and hope. They help me express my opinions.

So, in no particularly organized order, here are a few of my favorite quotes that I’ve come across in this first quarter of the school year:

Saint_Augustine
St. Augustine by Botticelli

“For a prohibition always increases an illicit desire.” -St. Augustine, City of God

“If we have a right to laugh in the theatre when actors know their parts, we should laugh still louder at ignorant fools in real life.” -St. Augustine, City of God

“Our hearts are restless until we find rest in thee.” -St. Augustine, Confessions

“But when man’s hope and help wholly failed, there appeared the Lord’s power and mercy to save them.” -William Bradford, Of Plymouth Plantation

“Humor can be dissected, as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process, and the innards are very discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind.” -E. B. White

“Bein’ friends is like being soldiers in the army. You live together, you fight together; you die together.” -Denver Moore, Same Kind of Different as Me

“We must beware equally of an undevotional theology and an untheological devotion.” -John Stott

“And do you know another thing, Arthur? Life is too bitter already, without territories and wars and noble feuds.” -T. H. White, The Once and Future King

I have concluded that T. H. White is a highly quotable man

“Direction is the greater part of valour.” -T. H. White, The Once and Future King

“The bravest people are the ones who don’t mind looking like cowards.” -T. H. White, The Once and Future King

“Might does not make right! Right makes right!” -T. H. White, The Once and Future King

“If there is one thing I can’t stand, it is stupidity. I always say that stupidity is the Sin against the Holy Ghost.” -T. H. White, The Once and Future King

“It doesn’t matter if you’re the slowest kid in gym class or the fastest man alive, every one of us is running. Being alive means running; running from something; running to something or someone. And no matter how fast you are, there are some things you can’t outrun; some things always manage to catch up to you.” -Barry Allen, The Flash

“Don’t forget from whence you came; the world’s gonna know your name.” -Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton

gulliver“The tiny Lilliputians surmise that Gulliver’s watch may be his god, because it is that which, he admits, he seldom does anything without consulting.” -Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels

“Every man desires to live long, but no man wishes to be old.” -Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels
